We've rolled out major improvements to the image and video capture experience on the RentCheck mobile app. These updates aim to make capturing inspection media smoother, clearer, and more intuitive than ever.

📸 Getting Started: The New Camera Screen

When you open any inspection area in the app, you'll see our redesigned camera screen. Here's a quick walkthrough of what to expect:

↑ Top Bar Icons

At the top of the screen, you’ll find newly designed icons. These include:

  • Reference image icon (if applicable)

  • Media type selector (Photo, Video, 360°, Upload)

  • Zoom level display

  • Flash settings

↓ Bottom Panel

The bottom of the screen includes:

  • Instructions panel

  • Capture button

  • “N/A” or “Continue” button

If a particular area or room doesn’t apply to the unit, you can mark it as “N/A.” Otherwise, begin capturing media.

📷 Capture Feedback + Media Counter

Taking photos is just the same - with a few added improvements! Once you take your first photo:

  • You’ll see clear capture feedback that the image was taken.

  • A counter will appear to show how many photos, videos, or 360° images you’ve taken for that feature.

    • If there is a minimum photo requirement, this is clearly highlighted here.

  • The instructions panel automatically collapses.

💭Instructions Panel

The instructions panel now has a new dynamic design.

Why the change?

As strong advocates for resident-led inspections, we want to make sure that residents have a clear understanding of what exactly they need to do as they are completing an inspection. We designed the instructions panel to collapse automatically for experienced property managers who need less guidance!

How does it work?

  • The panel shows helpful context like room name and area name. This is especially helpful for residents who are new to inspecting.

  • It auto-collapses after your first photo, giving you even more screen real estate to view the photo you are taking than before.

  • You can manually reopen it with a tap or swipe.

🔍Zoom Functionality

With the latest changes to zoom, you can pinch to zoom or tap through pre-set values (e.g., 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 3x) depending on your device’s hardware.

  • Pinch to zoom now matches the zoom level shown on screen.

  • All devices that have a wide angle lens are now able to capture wide angle photos in the RentCheck app. This can be done by pinching to zoom out or by cycling through the pre-set options.

  • Your last-used zoom setting is remembered as you move through the inspection.

🔦 Flash Settings

The flash control has three options, with a newly added Auto mode. Auto-flash detects low-light conditions and turns the flash on only when you need it.

You can cycle through these flash options:

  • Auto (default if supported)

  • On

  • Off

Note: Flash settings are saved during an inspection but reset when starting a new one.

📁 Reference Images

Reference images for inspection areas can be set up using our custom template feature. Reference images are useful for guiding users on what photos to capture or where to find a particular item you want captured.

How it works:

  • Tapping either the paperclip icon or "See Example" text link opens the example photos.

  • Hit the close button to go directly back to the capture screen when finished.

  • A red dot on the paperclip icon indicates they haven’t been viewed yet.

🌎 Landscape Photos & Videos

Our redesigned landscape mode ensures that only the right things rotate on the screen. The capture button stays put, as do the instructions. The top icons rotate with the screen orientation for a smooth and easy landscape experience.

Simply rotate your device to take landscape photos.

🎥 Switching Media Types

To switch between media types, tap the camera icon in the top bar. This will open a media options menu, where you have the option to select between different media types. Select from available options: photo, video, upload, or 360° capture.

Note: 360° and video are only available on fast track inspections or you can enable video on a feature by feature basis with our premium video add on. Reach out to our customer support team if you’d like to learn more about this add on!

Note: Uploading from the device is only available for property managers. Resident-assigned inspections require time-stamped photos at the time of inspection assignment.

🎥 Video Capture Experience

Video capture is available for Property Managers on fast-track inspections, or for any user who is adding a flag to an area. When you switch to video mode:

  • Tap the red capture button to begin recording.

  • A red ring counter shows time remaining (max 20 seconds).

  • A numerical counter appears at the top of the screen.

  • Zoom while recording is supported.

  • Tap the capture button again to stop recording.

🌍360° Photo Capture

360 image capture functionality is the same; simply connect to your camera's wifi and then tap the capture button in the RentCheck app when you want to take the photo.

  • The redesigned connection bar shows your 360 camera connection status.

  • After capturing, a green checkmark confirms the image was saved.
